The Sony SLV-D550P is the perfect blend of video technology, enabling you to continue watching your VHS tape library while also offering a wide variety of digital video, image, and audio compatibility. The SLV-D550P features a progressive-scan DVD player, 4-head VCR with 181-channel tuner, front A/V inputs for connecting a camera or gaming system, and Dolby Digital DTS multichannel audio output. The DVD portion of the SLV-D550P includes such features as frame advance (forward), screen zoom, bookmark, and virtual surround sound. In addition to DVD movie and CD audio discs, the SLV-D550P is compatible with VCD, SVCD, and CD-R/RW discs as well as both types of writeable DVD discs: DVD+RW/+R and DVD-RW/-R. You can also view JPEG images and listen to MP3 audio files saved to DVD and CD discs. The SLV-D550P offers RF and composite A/V outputs for both VCR and DVD and an RF input for the VCR. The VCR features 1 A/V input (on the front), while the DVD has 1 component-video out and 1 S-video out. With its coaxial and optical digital audio outputs, the SLV-D550P is ready for home theater systems offering Dolby Digital DTS surround sound. The VCR features 19 micron heads that ensure higher-quality recording in EP mode, a flash rewind function that rewinds a T-120 tape in 60 seconds, 1-month/8-event recording timer, and the Quickset Timer Dial, which lets you program your VCR with just a quick turn of the wrist. Dolby Digital: Digital audio compression technology developed by Dolby Laboratories that provides the same 5.1 discrete channels of high-quality digital audio found in Dolby Digital cinema audio systems. Because all of the channel data are recorded discretely, Dolby Digital offers good channel separation and little sound deterioration due to the digital channel data processing. It conforms to 5.1-channel surround sound. The rear channel is stereo, and there is a discrete subwoofer channel.

Four-head VCR: A VCR requires two video heads to record a picture. With four heads, a VCR can perform special effects like slow motion and freeze frame, and it is optimized for recording and playback in both the SP (2-hour) and SLP (6-hour) modes. VCD: Video CD (VCD) is a video standard that can store audio and video to a compact disc (rather than a DVD disc) using MPEG-1 compression. You can fit up to 74 minutes of video with audio onto a VCD-formatted CD, but you can expect the video quality to be similar to that of a VHS videotape.
