If fantasy have a go and you get chance to talk to a person of the 19th century, then you would be surprised to know that the person knows nothing about the television, almost mandatory in homes. Nobody would have thought at that period of time that there would be times when people would come to know about the things and events occurred somewhere else, in seconds, and in their homes! That there will be plays, serials, films and lot more that will be telecast to long distances; and there will also be educational programs for the children and the students! Nobody thought and nobody would have believed you on this topic. But this happened and the biggest invention of 20th century was television.
The invention of television led to a whole lot of things and people get jobs and work related to these and there were industries for providing television and other services related to it. In the starting point of this time, only lectures and special programs of great personality were telecast and BBC was the premier organization to do this. People were astonished, beyond limit, to know the things that would have reached them after several days. But the popularity of television goes on increasing and it took in its grasp almost all the humanity.
Now to satisfy the growing needs of the customers, companies propped up that were providing entertainment and recreation programs. Actors, directors, and other people associated with this art, got a new way to express their talent before the audience that might never see them in person, and to whom they might never meet either. From News channels, film channels, the television has started providing sports channels and educational channels running for 24 hours in all around the world, satisfying the needs of every community. There are regional and international channels, and some channels also have different language channels for different states and countries. Nobody can tell which channel is popular and which is seen more; for, the personal tastes differ even in one family and some family have multiple television sets to satisfy the diverse taste of the members. However, sports channels are hot favorites among the younger generation and the children. Elders like to watch News channels and Ladies also like where a serial or films are telecast.
It is useless to say that it was the gift of science to the human community and there is lot of science involved in telecasting the programs from one station to different receivers around the world. For the manufacturing of televisions, Physics, Chemistry, mechanical and electronic engineering plays their part and to operating the television, you require electricity, which for its production also involves a number of sciences. There are also some satellite channels, and therefore, involve space science also. However, the rays that are sent and received from the center are electromagnetic waves and are received from the satellite to the different receivers around the world. It is important to know for a non-scientific person that electromagnetic waves can travel in vacuum also! And there are some arguments that they have some adverse effect on the human life, and therefore, we see a lot of new types of cancers that were non-existent in previous times. However, there is no direct proof for this kind of statements!
Television, as intended in its formative years, was to provide information, communication and awareness among the people about the world and the happenings that may have direct or indirect effect on their lives. But now it is vast and almost wholly changed and has more of an entertainment object—an idiot box, as they call it. This is because people tend to watch TV the whole day and forget about their respective duties and therefore the families suffer. The children lacked in studies and were more prone to watching the films then reading and playing games. No matters, there were educational programs also, but the priority was given to entertainment and recreational programs. And in East countries they have a famous adage that television is tele-poison; for, it takes the youth away from their ancestral values and render them rebellious and adamant. However, there is a truth behind it and people have examples of ruined careers and destroyed families due to the effect of television. We are not here to criticize the television; but the programs, that are not informative, good, aesthetic and intended for some pure cause, but are rather vulgar, cheap and valueless. Media is free and has its "way and go" for whatever it may choose to show, if there are no particular laws from the government of the country. But rather sorry state of the world and particularly the Eastern countries is mainly due to the fact that they are prone to watch valueless programs, and end themselves filled with negative and passionate thoughts that may lead to ruin their and others’ life. We have to work for making this wonderful gift of science an all-cherished subject in all the communities and give maximum benefit to the humanity from it.
