There is very famous story with the TV and cricket and if you are a lover of cricket then you must be aware of it: yes, we are talking about the famous one-day match between India and Zimbabwe—semi-final match of 1983 world cup.
It was first appearance of Zimbabwe in the World cup edition of the game and they had already caused a major upset by trouncing the Australians; for, they, thinking that Zimbabwe is a new team, rested their key player, Dennis Lillie, and faced the defeat. The Indian were roaring with the confidence, as they had a very good run under the able captaincy of all time great Kapil Dev. But as the Zimbabweans were proving their preparation solid and competent, they posted a good total and had the Indian at almost on the verge of a defeat. Five wicket were down for almost 20 runs and then walked out the great man Kapil Dev, shouldering the responsibility of a large nation and of-course of his team. The history had to had it that he went on to make 175 not out runs and won the match for India by sharing a record 9th wicket partnership of 125 runs with the wicket-keeper, Syed Kirmani. It was the first century by an Indian in a one-day international match and was the highest runs scored in a world cup.
That would have been a treat to watch for any cricket lover? –Why I am saying" would have been"! Yes, this is the point where the importance of television played its part and we missed that great epoch-making score. When I was young people used to say that because Zimbabwe was a new team, so the TV channels thought not to telecast the match. But I wondered how a Semi-final of a world cup could be left just because the team was weak, and that even they have proved themselves otherwise. It was later, I learnt that BBC was having a strike on that particular day, and therefore, the match was not telecast. And there is perhaps no live recording of one of the finest moments of Indian cricket. There are pictures and only living reminiscences in the minds of people who were there or was playing the match. Nothing else to show the supporters and lovers of cricket! This is where you got know the importance of television and its channels when such a historic moment is left unrecorded.
